Joe Wilson's Insulting and Offensive Response

Thomas Whitley

Regular readers of my site will know that I recently wrote a post about how House Republicans are trying to redefine rape in such a way as to differentiate between "forcible" and non-forcible rape. I wrote this in that post:

It says that a woman would not be required to pay for an abortion on “if the pregnancy occurred because the pregnant female was the subject of an act of forcible rape.” In other words, the 170 sponsors of the bill think that consent (technically, lack of consent) is not important to defining rape, just force. So, if a woman has Rohypnol slipped in her drink and is then raped OR has nonconsensual sex because she fears for her safety or life but there isn’t actual force involved, then she should be required to pay for an abortion on her own.

I followed up my post with an e-mail to my congressman, Joe Wilson. He is one of the co-sponsors of the bill, HR3. I wrote of my concerns with this provision in the bill and asked him withdraw his sponsorship of the bill. I checked that I did want a response to my remarks.

Now, I'm not completely naive. I fully expected a form letter as a response. Today, my expectations were realized.

I have a problem with form responses in general, but this form response was outright insulting. You'll notice when you read the letter that in an effort to tout his pro-life record he states,

Most recently, I cosponsored H.R. 3, the "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act." Please be assured that I will keep your thoughts in mind and will continue to support pro-life efforts during the 112th Congress.

That is exactly what I asked you NOT to do, Joe Wilson. That is a slap in the face. You clearly do not "appreciate [me] taking the time to write" nor do you "value [my] input" or you (or someone on your staff would have actually read my remarks.

Further, Joe, the last line of your letter says,

If I may be of further assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact me.

What good would that do? You have already proven to me that you do not actually value the input of your constituents and that you're apparently to busy (I do understand how busy your job actually is) to actually listen to those you supposedly represent. I tried to use the very few avenues that citizens actually have of trying to hold their representatives accountable and I am rewarded with an insulting and offensive form letter as a response. It is actions like this that have caused people's faith in the government to plummet to an all-time low.

Thank you for not caring.
